The marble quarries near Carrara, a tasting of local
specialities and the medieval Sarzana.

The tour starts in the morning by bus from La Spezia.  Our
professional tour guide explains the history of the marble quarries,
the culture, the plants and animals of the Apuan Alps. You will
visit one of the marble quarries from outside and see the stonemasons
doing their hard work. It is impressing to observe the heavy
trucks with tons of marble coming down the small streets and
serpentines of the steep mountains. After a short walk a selection
of regional specialities will be served in a cosy pub in the
historical village of Colonnata high up in the mountains: Colonnata
is famous for its snow white bacon, matured in marble, which
melts in one´s mouth. In the afternoon a short stop in
Sarzana, a beautiful little town with a well conserved historical
centre. There you will  enjoy
some leisure time for shopping in the cosy little boutiques
of the small medieval streets. Return to La Spezia.
