The Marine Protected Area of Cinque Terre: important initiatives
Deterrents against trawling in the AMP Cinque Terre
L’Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area was established by the decree of the Ministry of Environment 12 December 1997 and includes the towns of Riomaggiore, Vernazza, Monterosso and Levanto for a small portion.
The implementing decree, and the specification of the AMP prohibit bottom trawling in the waters of the reserve, considering carefully-- the high environmental impact of this kind of fishing that is practiced pulling, by long steel cables, nets weighted with chains that literally plow bottom. In this way, these tools levy, in addition to fish species, also benthic components , algae, larvae and eggs, causing significant damage to the marine.
Despite checks on compliance with the provisions of trawling is conducted with unquestionable professionalism by security staff ( especially in the person of Comm. Bassi Andrea) in synergy with the local Harbour of La Spezia, not infrequently some “fishermen” have intruded into the waters with their boats prohibited. The difficulty lies in controlling the type of fishing: craft making real “flash” within the prohibited waters by towing the net for a limited time and away immediately after, not allowing time to catch them red-handed controllers (as better explained in the video).
The project “M.A.R.E” – Antistrascico measures for the sustainable ripoli -funded by the Ministry for the Environment and the Sea, is a collaborative effort between the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area Reef Consulting and society and provides for the sinking of concrete blocks “sea friendly” which are inserted in the heavy steel hooks. The presence of these blocks on the seabed is an effective deterrent against illegal fishing as,if “incoccio” one of them, the network would be irreparably damaged with substantial economic damage to the operator.
